Electric Fence Solutions to Deter Nuisance Deer
from Croplands

by Andrew LaFlame, Product Manager at AgraTronix

STREETSBORO, OHIO (July 11, 2012) – Keeping deer away from your farm or ranch or out of the grain you recently bagged and stored in the field can be cumbersome. Andrew LaFlame, Product Manager at AgraTronix says, “The good news is there are several electric fence options that can help to keep nuisance deer out of your croplands.” Here are a few solutions that Power Wizard Shock Technology recommends:

  1. The most simplistic electric fence method used to keep deer out of crop fields consists of a one-wire fence three feet in height with bait attached (e.g. – peanut butter spread across tinfoil and attached to the fence line) to draw deer in, shock them and ultimately train them to stay away from the protected area. Typical materials for such a fence include an electric fence energizer, insulated electric fence polywire or polyrope, insulators, fiberglass posts, gates and gate accessories, and a ground rod wired to the energizer’s negative terminal.

  2. In cases where you need something more than a simple one-wire electric fence, a very practical and affordable option is to install a second line of posts three feet behind the first and add your new fence lines at approximately twenty-one and forty-eight inches high. This method is far more effective in protecting the crop than just adding extra charged lines to the inner fence for multiple reasons. For one, the inner fence line is closer to the crop providing the deer with a cushioned landing if they choose to jump the fence; while the outer wire is far enough away from the crop to prevent grazing from outside the fence.

  3. The most reliable and permanent solution is a high-tensile electric fence built approximately six feet tall. A white tail deer can jump up to fifteen feet high but almost never do because of their poor close-in depth perception and fear of landing too hard. Deer rarely jump over relatively low fencing and are more likely to go through, around, or under a fence. High-tensile electric fences have long been favored by farmers and ranchers because they have minimal maintenance requirements, they lack grounding problems with dry or frozen soil and have little to no electrical conductivity issues due to their thick, galvanized steel wires with firmly set posts.
